So, we asked for a top-notch Chardonnay, and boy did we get one! What we didn't ask for was a white blend to blow our socks off, and boy did we get one!
We were asked to taste it blind at the winery and we did identify the Semillon, and the Sauvignon Blanc, but what was providing that exotic richness on the nose; Riesling? No, Torrontés. 33% of each varietal is separately barrel fermented then blended and rested in those barrels for a further 4 months.
The oak is delicate, the fruit is complex and explosive, run through with delicious acidity, steely and nervous, and we suspect this wine will age very well indeed, if it lasts that long. The grapes are from the Uco Valley, naturally.
“Rich, well-integrated nose. Reductive and racy on the palate, with the Torrontés portion not obvious.”

“This super-smart Argentinian take on the Bordeaux white blend from top producer Susana Balbo mixes in a little of the aromatic Torrontés grape variety, bringing flavours of tangy grapefruit, guava and minerals, and a superb length and depth.”
David Williams, The Observer, 50 Best Wines for Christmas 2019 (2017 vintage)
“Susana Balbo’s mould-breaking cuvée of Semillon with 30% Torrontés and 25% Sauvignon Blanc has rapidly established itself as one of Argentina’s best whites.”

“Classic, bell pepper, capsicum, New Zealand-style savvy noise. Spice. Aromatic complexity and a honeyed lanolin texture I expect from the Semillon through the mid-palate.”
Harry Crowther, The Buyer, July 2018 (2016 vintage)
"This wine has a fine, delicate yet persistent florality, with citrus elements showing on the nose and palate over white and yellow summer fruits courtesy of the Semillon... A very fine and potentially fascinating wine."
Steven Spurrier, Decanter.com, February 2017 (2016 vintage)
"The lychee and perfumed floral notes of the Torrontés is powerful, but there's a flinty character too that is very attractive, with the palate showing delightful fruit intensity and a huge blast of grapefruit. Delicious acidity and intensity, long and shimmering salty acidity."
Tom Cannavan's WinePages.Com, February 2016 (2015 vintage)
"A mould-breaking, low alcohol cuvée of Torrontés, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, all from the Uco Valley and two thirds fermented in concrete eggs. Grapefruit, gooseberry and struck match notes are complemented by a hint of oak on the Torrontés. One of the country's best whites in year one."
