With the two Sin Límites (without limits) Malbec wines, winemaker Edy Del Popolo presents us with a masterclass in terroir. Edy is a famous viticulturist who understands as well as anyone in Argentina how the particulars of soil, aspect, micro-climate and, perhaps most vital here – altitude – all play important roles in bringing together a singular expression of terroir.
Both wines are fermented in concrete eggs with skin contact for 25 days and are then transferred into second and third use French oak for 12 months prior to release.
This wine, from the rediscovered area of Pedernal in San Juan at a whopping 1500 metres above sea level. Pedernal is Spanish for flint and these soils, formed by glacial deposits, are full of dark, flat flint stones intermixed with coarse gravel and sandy loam.
The wine is strikingly herbaceous on the nose with lots of attractive garrigue-like aromas – thyme and rosemary – as well high floral notes of lavender. Silky-textured in the mouth with delightful red fruits and a very long finish.
